Live Concert Reviews
Friday night and the Cape Town faithful needed something awesome to make them forget the abysmal display of cricket we were forced to swallow...
The perfect remedy to our collective woes presented itself in the form of local metal heroes Mind Assault, putting on a free gig in honour of their good friend Sharne’s birthday and in order to release upon us, the eager masses, their new CD/EP, Metal Rites.
Going to watch a live metal act at ROAR guarantees you 2 things. Great sound and an almighty hangover the next day courtesy of their incredibly awesome staff.
After the Thundergods treated us to a set full of Amon Amarth covers, Mind Assault took to the stage like a panzer division intent on running us into the ground. Their particular brand of groove laden, mosh metal has been honed to an instrument of such force over the years, it’s an exceptional – if somewhat contradictory - case of death by blunt object. Jacque’s vocal delivery is nothing short of devastating, a veritable barrage of brutal belligerence. All this on top of a wall of sound so sonically powerful as to rip you mercilessly limb from limb, if you’re not already doing so in the pit. Very few bands can boast a rhythm section as tight as these guys and they were in top form on the night, belting out riff after earth-shattering riff, much to the delight of the assembled masses. Not to mention the sublimely slick lead guitar work of Flapper (the Stig of blistering guitar leads) breaking out and dazzling everyone with his dizzying displays of virtuosity.
All in all a vintage Mind Assault performance, where everyone in attendance got their required dose of metal mayhem and – as is standard procedure for these guys – a liberal amount of fun doing so. So much so that the lead singer (weighing in the red corner at what I can only describe as over 100kg) spent most of the time wrestling the mic from the guest of honour (blue corner) a birthday girl that has to weigh less than 50kg and was blessed with a truly blood curdling shriek. This made for awesome entertainment and a glimpse into what Mind Assault would sound like were they ever to pursue a style more akin to Cradle Of Filth.
Mind Assault always put on a great show, and this was no exception, their rapport with their fans is as infectious as it is testament to how much they are loved and respected. Long may they carry on.
