Only one full week remains until one of Cape Town’s most anticipated annual metal events, WinterFest’11.  Established in 2007, this will be the 10th one-day festival hosted by Metal4Africa in Stellenbosch, nestled in the Western Cape Winelands some 45 minutes outside of Cape Town CBD...

The organizing team takes pride in that these events have become widely known as amongst the few – if not the top – leading annual events on the Cape Town metalheads social calendar. As per the norm, the line-up is representative of a strong variety of metal acts, showcasing much of what South African metal has to offer today’s listeners.

SACRIFIST is a guest from Johannesburg, and is also one of only two South African metal bands still active today who formed as far back as 1993 (the other, Agro, appeared at SummerFest’09).  This means that some of the event’s barely legal attendees will be watching a band that has been making metal for a lifetime! SACRIFIST is living proof that bands get only better with age.

Another guest to the city will be folk metallers BALYIOS from Pretoria. This will be their first visit to the region, and the first time this sub-genre is presented on the M4A stage in Stellenbosch. There have already been ripples of excitement felt amongst the city’s growing numbers in followers of folk metal.

Kick-starting the festivities at 17:00 is technical death metal outfit IMPERIUM OF MAN who is one of the region’s hardest working acts of late. Following closely at 17:45 is a demonstration of what happens when members of former top bands merge to forge a new sound with BULLETSCRIPT. 

The festival takes an interesting turn of events at 18:30 with the inclusion of the female fronted COLD HAND CHEMISTRY, an eclectic mixture of progressive hard rock & metal driven by the passionate vocals of Chantel Smit. By 20:00, WinterFest’11 will begin rolling out the headliners with the likes of ING and INFANTERIA thrashing it out, and finally bringing the night to a dark close with WOLVEN DECORUM taking the stage at 23:30. 

But it’s not only the bands who aim to please WinterFest’11 audiences.  An outdoor entertainment area will feature not only metal DJ’s, but also some fiery performances by the metal-inspired BOB’s Beasties at intervals throughout the night.

So make sure you’re not going to miss this one!
