Featured South African Band

STRIDENT was wrought from hell-forged steel in 2008 when they first unleashed their sonic fury at the Klein Libertas Theater in Stellenbosch in support of the mighty Kobus!.

Battles, Odin, Metal, Epic Things - African power metal!

Frustrated with a South African metal scene dominated by death and black metal and by the lack of epic, melodic metal, guitarists Deon Van Heerden and George Van Der Riet decided to take it upon themselves to form the band they had always wanted to see: old-school, headbanging, sword-thrusting, guitar-solo-drenched epic melodic power metal.

With Deon additionally taking over the vocals and enlisting the help of a third guitarist Niel Schoeman as well as bassist Piet Delport, keyboarder Daniel Vollgraaff and drummer Christian Burgess, STRIDENT swore to leave no face unmelted in their quest for metallic conquest and glory.

Melodic, theatrical and unashamedly tongue-in-cheek, they soon rose to prominence with their energetic, over-the-top live performances which include the knighting of their most loyal fans live on stage with a broadsword, inducting them into the Order Of The Knights Of Stridentia.

STRIDENT have secured numerous headlining slots at prominent local festivals, including Metal4Africa, Ramfest and Whiplash and ultimately saw the band opening for Finnish folk metal masters Ensiferum in Johannesburg during their South Africa tour in 2010.

Their debut album, Oath, was recorded at Jo Ellis’ Blooroom studios in late 2010, and was enthusiastically received by the South African metal community. The album has been released under the Creative Commons license BY-NC enabling anyone to copy and distribute it for non-commercial purposes.

The music video for “Power Metal From Space” was released in January 2011 (watch below).

Today, Strident stands as South Africa’s defender of true metal, willing to live and die for their brand that is heavy metal, in all its cheesy glory.
